When we think of Christian values, we often think of love, compassion, and service. But what does that look like in action, especially when disaster strikes? Can preparedness and disaster relief really be part of our faith?
At Bridges of Love, we believe the answer is a resounding yes—and we’re passionate about showing how disaster preparedness, response, and recovery are deeply connected to living out the love of Christ. In fact, it’s because of our Christian faith that we do what we do: serve others with compassion, help rebuild hope, and ensure that no one is left behind.
But how exactly do we bring our faith into action when disasters happen?
Disaster Relief: A Christian Call to Action
Jesus taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). It’s not just about caring for people when it’s convenient; it’s about actively stepping up when people are hurting and in need. And disasters—whether they are natural events like wildfires or floods or personal crises like a job loss or family tragedy—are times when that love should shine the brightest.
Think about it: when a community is struck by disaster, what happens? The resources are stretched thin. The emotional toll can be overwhelming. But as Christians, we know that even in the darkest moments, we are called to be the light. This is exactly what our work at Bridges of Love is all about.
The Church as a Beacon of Hope
Our Faith Emergency Preparedness Initiative (FEPI) embodies this calling. In the face of disaster, the local church is often the first place where people turn. It’s a place of refuge, support, and, crucially, a place where practical help can be mobilized.
Churches have the power to become a lifeline, providing food, shelter, and emotional support to those in need. The Bible reminds us that we are the "body of Christ," and the church should be at the heart of any community’s response to crisis.
Equipping Communities for Action
One of the core ways we make this happen is through our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. CERT trains individuals to respond effectively when disaster strikes. They learn how to provide basic support in emergencies until professional responders arrive. In short, they are empowered to act with confidence, love, and grace, showing up when their community needs them most.
This proactive approach to disaster preparedness reflects the heart of the Gospel: caring for those who are hurting, providing for the needy, and offering hope in times of despair.
Rebuilding Hope and Offering Support
In times of crisis, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and alone. When homes are destroyed, businesses are lost, and lives are turned upside down, the need for support is greater than ever. That’s where our Alberta Recovers program steps in.
The heart of this program is simple: connecting people who are affected by disasters with those who want to help. We believe in the power of community—when we come together, there is no obstacle too great to overcome. This program provides a vital bridge between those in need and those with the ability to offer support. Whether it’s food, clothing, or even emotional support, Alberta Recovers ensures that no one faces their recovery journey alone. By uniting the generosity of others with the urgent needs of disaster survivors, we help restore hope.
The Christian Heart Behind Disaster Preparedness
At the heart of all our programs is one simple but powerful idea: love is action. As Christians, we are called to actively serve those around us, especially when they are vulnerable and in need. That’s what disaster preparedness, response, and recovery are all about—caring for people in their most desperate moments and ensuring that they don’t have to go through it alone.
Churches Often Respond in the Moment, But What if They Were Prepared?
While many churches do respond to disasters as they happen, often they are reacting to the event instead of preparing for it. How much more effective would their response be if they had a well-thought-out plan in place ahead of time? Disaster preparedness doesn’t just help churches respond more efficiently; it enables them to be more impactful, resourceful, and organized when people need help the most. Having a proactive plan ensures that churches can be a stronger and more reliable source of support during a crisis, rather than scrambling to meet needs in the moment.
When we prepare, respond, and recover together, we’re living out the commandment to love one another (John 13:34). Every time we train a CERT member, help after a disaster, or connect a donor to someone in need, we are showing the love of Christ in real, tangible ways.
